Fourth Place near Court Street Brooklyn: 1931
The photo comes from the New York Library Archive. This shot, taken on 6/25/31 shows Fourth Place, facing Smith Street towards the gas tanks. This is a PL Sperr photo. In my previous posts, I showed the gas tanks at this location near the Gowanas canal. This scene shows how the area looked during the construction of the IND Smith Street - 8th Avenue Brooklyn line. This photo shows the area where the viaduct makes it descent into the subway near Carrol Street. According to one newspaper report today, the Smith-9th Street station, not too far from where this photograph was taken, is one of the 11 most scenic stations in the New York City subway system.
